Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Doin' that Rag

In honor of the 69 Ark performances:

Trivia: Apparently "Doin' that Rag" is considered to be one of the toughest songs to master the vocals on in Rock Band.

Sitting in Mangrove Valley chasing lightbeams
Everything wanders from baby to Z
Baby, baby, pretty, young on Tuesday
Old like a rum drinking demon at tea

Baby, baby, tell me what's the matter
Why, why tell me, what's your why now?
Tell me why will you never come home?
Tell me what's your reason if you got a good one

Everywhere I go
The people all know
Everyone's doin' that rag

Take my line go fishing for a Tuesday
Maybe take my supper, eat it down by the sea
Gave my baby twenty, forty good reasons
Couldn't find any better ones in the morning at three

Rain gonna come but the rain gonna go, you know
Stepping off sharply from the rank and file
Awful cold and dark like a dungeon
Maybe get a little bit darker 'fore the day

Hipsters, tripsters,
real cool chicks, sir,
everyone's doin' that rag

You needn't gild the lily, offer jewels to the sunset
No one is watching or standing in your shoes
Wash your lonely feet in the river in the morning
Everything promised is delivered to you

Don't neglect to pick up what your share is
All the winter birds are winging home now
Hey Love, go and look around you
Nothing out there you haven't seen before now

But you can wade in the water
and never get wet
if you keep on doin' that rag

One eyed jacks and the deuces are wild
The aces are crawling up and down your sleeve
Come back here, Baby Louise,
and tell me the name
of the game that you play

Is it all fall down?
Is it all go under?
Is it all fall down, down, down
Is it all go under?

Everywhere I go
the people all know
everybody's doin' that rag

I always think of this song when I hear Garcia talk about , when explaining why they didn't do more of the early stuff , how he and Hunter hadn't learned how to write sons yet . It is a ambitious, and awkward ( thus the "hard to sing" part ), I LOVE this era, but I find this song drags a bit for me . Maybe a bit of editing, on Hunter's part , maybe some extra musical material from Garcia's direction.
I know friends who think the world of this song , but , as others have hinted here, it might have REALLY dragged, if it had been brought back in the later eras !

This song is way overwritten from a musical standpoint... I tried to learn it once and decided it just was not worth it. It is an interesting song to listen to but I imagine playing it would be quite a feat to pull off well.

I could hear the Doin' That Rag chord changes as a sweet jazz instrumental though! The Americana stuff from Workingman's Dead and American Beauty is a lot more straightforward and traditional folk/blues/bluegrass in compositional style.

one of my favorite short songs from the early era, love the music, the lyrics are cool, typical Hunter, just a great great song; quite glad the GD never broke it out again, it never would have touched what was already done, which isn't to say it wouldn't have been good to hear again, but only that it seems more fitting to the early years, and why taint it otherwise

Opps, the first one got posted before I was done lol, my 2 tear old is a little octopus around the 'puter.

These lyrics stand out at me for some reason, I've never had any luck figuring out Hunter, After this posts I'm on my way to the annottated site.

But what my comment is , Having been a military man , this sounds to me like a bummer night in the brig. I know garcia was in the military for a minute an had some awol issues, Could these lyrics be some extension of those memories?

Long ago I wrote Hunter a letter about the lyrics of this song because Garcia did not pronounce the word after "real cool" clearly (which is shown here as "chicks, sir"). He told me that the correct word is "chicksters" which is a riff on Lord Buckley. He humbly said Garcia didn't sing it clearly because it wasn't very good.

Late bloomer here I guess, I'd heard of him , but never listened to any of his bits, What was his story? Too much expresso? Benzidrine perhaps, or a combination of both.

Crazy man,

Nothing in the annotated lyrics about my query, probably a bad marrige or relationship, Thanks for the Buckley reference, gave me an excuse to check it out

I think it would have been tough for them to pull off, even if they revived it late 70's early 80's I imagine it would have required lots of practice. It most certainly would not have captured the spirit of the 69 versions.

why? Jer would have slowed the tune down to yet another snails pace ballad

DOH! Alls fair, can't let the man NEVER be the butt of a jab can we? Gives Weir, Brent, and Vinnie a break for once.

Correct

I believe it is 'carpet' tacks to be specific

'aged toad gargling carpet tacks'
